To have a mobile live video streaming app on your phone is different to the default video recorder you currently have that will store a file on your phone. Facebook Live and Periscope will allow you to download an app to stream to their platform, but what about a generic mobile live streaming app that you can use for broadcasters and TV production companies specialising in live events, that can contribute video for live news, live sports, music and other live events?
Broadcast MCR Room
A broadcaster normally has an ingest station or Master Control Room (MCR) that all live feeds are being ingested to. This often requires converting the output of the mobile live streaming app once it arrives at the ingest station into a baseband signal, such as HD-SDI, or an IP based stream such as RTMP or RTSP. This live stream is then fed into their mixing or switching desk to conform with their internal media workflow for programme making and then onto playout.
There are plenty of comparisons on the internet of video cameras versus the iPhone 6, and the reviews are good. They often talk about “Broadcast Quality” that for a live tv streaming app normally means 720p format and above. Especially for news type environments. Quality is important, but ease and getting instant video content is even more of a priority especially in a news environment where events can unfold very quickly.
Soliton has ML Cam, part of the Smart Telecaster range of products, that can be installed on the iPhone and can be used to live-stream from the iPhone without the need of a broadcast camera. ML Cam is a mobile live streaming app that writes to a server that can be owned and installed by the broadcaster or sports production company within their facility.
The server, normally a standard Win 7 or Win 10, can use HD-View, a software decoder from Soliton that can decode the signal to HD-SDI or to RTMP/RTSP. The latencies are low and HD-View can be used to remotely change some of the settings on ML Cam, the live video streaming app.
Incidentally on the decoding side, RTMP and RTSP can be used to live stream direct to many cloud based or internet platforms such as Wowza, Facebook, YouTube , ustream etc. RTSP is the secure version and can be used by Public Safety applications such as law enforcement. In summary HD-View can create many streams from ML-Cam, Soliton’s mobile live TV streaming app.
